A letter by the European Commission to the Romanian Minister of Public Finance, Ms Anca Dragu, was very critical of the adoption of the "datio in solutum" law aimed at helping consumers with financial difficulties to deal with their mortgages. Since the publication of the letter, as well as the letter in reply (by BETTER FINANCE and BEUC amongst others) several positive amendments have been adopted by the Romanian Parliament, in particular the 'datio in solutum' law, which is a good way forward to help out a great number of distressed debtors.

The letter aims to draw the EC's attention to the fact that the EP adopted a resolution calling on the EC to share best practices regarding the applicaiton of datio in solutum in EU Member States.
